What is Moss Agate?

Moss agate is a semi-precious gemstone that, despite its name, isn’t a true agate but a form of chalcedony quartz. Traditional agates are known for their distinctive banding, while moss agate lacks these layers. Instead, it features a translucent to milky white background filled with moss-like inclusions ranging from light to deep green.

These patterns, called dendritic inclusions, aren’t actually moss at all; they’re formed by traces of minerals such as manganese or iron. The term “dendritic” refers to their branching, organic appearance, which often resembles ferns, trees, or moss.

Is Moss Agate good for an engagement ring?

Moss Agate is a stunning option for an engagement ring. But, there are some things to consider!

Moss agate ranks around 6.5-7 on the Moh's scale, which is fair-good. In addition, moss agate does not have a defined cleavage, which means it has good toughness against fracturing. Still, moss agate is much softer than diamond or sapphire, and special care should be taken while wearing moss agate jewelry. For this reason, we recommend removing your ring for all manual labor (including sports, going to the gym, gripping items with force, such as bicycle handlebars, luggage, etc.) and while doing household chores, including washing dishes, laundry, and cleaning.
