Engagement Ring FAQ
Custom engagement rings are similar in price to our existing designs, depending on your vision. All of our engagement rings are made to order, so most designs can be customized easily without a difference in price. The exceptions to this rule are designs that include more expensive materials, labor-intensive techniques, or a CAD drawing, which starts at $250.
Engagement rings are traditionally worn on the ring finger, or fourth digit, of the left hand of the wearer. Well, at least in Western cultures. The origins are debated, but one theory is that the ancient Romans believed in a vein called the Vena Amoris (vein of love) that ran directly to the heart from this finger. Therefore, wearing a ring on this finger and hand meant that the ring was closer to the heart and made it a stronger symbol of love. This theory of an important vein running to the heart has since been debunked, but the tradition of the ring finger has remained.
An engagement ring is usually given during the proposal and tends to be more decorative. Women's engagement rings typically feature a center stone, halo setting, or other show-stopping details. The engagement ring is typically worn from the engagement on, meanwhile the wedding band is traditionally exchanged during the wedding ceremony and is often simpler, sleeker, and made to complement the engagement ring.
Wedding bands or wedding rings can be worn above or below the engagement ring. Some choose to wear their wedding ring and engagement ring stacked together, some wear their engagement ring on their right hand and their wedding ring on their left, or some choose to wear only one ring depending on the occasion. However, most Western tradition holds that the wedding ring is worn below the engagement ring, closest to the heart.
Some couples may find this inconvenient during their ceremony though, as the engagement ring will need to be removed in order to put on the wedding ring below the engagement ring. At Staghead Designs, we find that many wedding ring designs simply fit and look better when worn above the engagement ring. However, we always encourage our clients to do what they think looks and feels best for them!
Some of our couples also opt for what we call a "Bridal Suite". A Bridal Suite is created by wearing two wedding bands, one above and one below the engagement ring. Whether you choose one wedding band or two is completely up to you and your preferences.
You may have heard the outdated claim that 3 months' salary is an ideal amount for an engagement ring. But how much you should spend on an engagement ring is entirely dependent on you and your partner. Most couples create a budget that works for them based on their financial situation, financial goals, and what they are looking for in an engagement ring.
At Staghead Designs, we specialize in unique and alternative engagement rings. Often using non-traditional gemstones like Sapphires, Moss agate, Opal, Garnet, and more, which are more affordable than natural diamonds that are most commonly used in engagement rings.
