What Are Salt and Pepper Diamonds?

For many years salt and pepper diamonds have been seen as undesirable by traditional jewelers who have overlooked and dismissed the beauty that exists in their so-called flaws! Recently they have gained popularity, as creative jewelers and designers have recognized the beauty in their unique colors and characteristics. Salt and pepper diamonds often include many different flaws and inclusion, which make them extremely unique! These flaws can consist of graining, bearding, clouding, cracks and inclusions, chips, pinpoints, wisps, and other crystals growing inside the gem. The color itself can also vary wildly - anywhere from extraordinarily dark, almost black in appearance, to gray and icy in color. Salt & pepper diamonds are also budget-friendly and generally more ethically and sustainably sourced when compared to traditional diamonds.

Please note that neither the unique characteristics nor the color of a particular stone can be controlled. Because of this, we do not offer free stone replacements due to the aesthetic and natural variation.

The beauty of Salt and Pepper diamonds is that no two are the same. What's more, these diamonds are not graded like traditional diamonds. The 4 Cs (Cut, Clarity, Color, and Carat Weight) don't come into play here. Like traditional diamonds, salt and pepper diamonds also rank 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness, making them the hardest gemstone used in jewelry. If the diamond is mounted carefully and treated with care, it can last for generations!

This stone is photographed in professional studio lighting that mimics natural sunlight of 5500 degrees kelvin.

This stone displays faint blue fluorescence under 365nm UV light.

For care and cleaning, we strongly recommend using soapy water and a soft brush as the safest way to clean your jewelry, avoiding ultrasonic and steam cleaners. We also suggest avoiding extreme heat as it has the potential to harm the color variation of your stone. To be safe, remove your jewelry while enjoying a soak in the hot tub or steam in the sauna! You will also want to avoid strong household chemicals and cleaners such as bleach.

Additional Information

**We do not reserve stones for any customer expressing interest in a particular stone. You must complete the purchase of the stone to save and reserve it for yourself! **Please note that when purchasing a stone, we do not send just the stone itself. In purchasing a Mine Stone, you are reserving that stone in order to work with one of our custom designers to build the perfect ring for your stone! We are artists, not stone dealers, and our passion is working alongside our clients in designing unique and beautiful rings. We love nothing more than seeing custom rings completed and a client dreams realized!**

  • 3 Weeks: Rings set in Titanium, Black Zirconium, Damascus Steel, Tungsten, or Ceramic (*If the ring contains any Silver or Gold the production time is 6 weeks)
  • 6 Weeks: Any ring containing Silver or Gold
  • 8 Weeks: Women's engagement rings & any ring with precious stones
  • 8-10+ Weeks: Fully custom rings always have the possibility of taking longer than 8 weeks from the time the order is placed. Designing a custom commissioned ring takes time and extra care to ensure we can make the ring you have envisioned come to life. This extra time accounts for sourcing custom stones, new materials, CAD design, or the custom casting of an original design and the complexity of that design

Before we start crafting your ring, we want to give you a white glove sizing experience that is unlike anything you will get from another online jeweler because you deserve the confidence in knowing that your ring will fit perfectly! With Staghead Designs, you will receive a box containing stainless steel rings ranging in half sizes from size 4 to 14. These rings are made in a similar width and interior fit as the ring we will be making for you, giving you an accurate method to discover the perfect size for your ring.

Our sizing kit is offered as a FREE option with every ring purchase and can be added to your order by selecting the "Free Ring Sizing Kit" option under the "Ring Size Or Free Ring Sizing Kit" dropdown menu during checkout.

*Please note that choosing our ring sizing kit will delay the production of your ring as we cannot start production until you send us confirmation of your final size.*

If you are getting sized locally it is extremely important to follow our sizing guidelines to ensure a perfect fit! Please click HERE for additional information on this process and to read the fine print on all of our sizing policies and guidelines.

CERAMIC AND TUNGSTEN RINGS ARE ONLY AVAILABLE IN COMFORT FIT

WIDE RINGS (6mm-10mm wide):
We recommend being sized using standard fit rings (not comfort fit) that are the same width as the ring you would like to order from us. Most of our wide rings default to 8mm wide. Please do not use the thin sizing rings that jewelers have as these are not accurate and an actual ring will be tighter (because of added width) than the sizing rings that are used. While we use our own method to create comfort of wear on our rings, it is different than what is referred to as "comfort fit" at most jewelry stores. For this reason, try on standard fit rings. We provide a beveled-cut edge and will thus be more comfortable to the wearer than a typical standard fit ring. Lastly, do not allow a jeweler to give you a size according to a ‘ring-sizing dowel’, as in our experience they can measure differently and can vary based on how the jeweler was trained to read it. A ring can be off by a half size or more, depending on the dowel.

NARROW RINGS (1mm-5mm wide): We recommend being sized using rings that are the same width as the ring you will be ordering in, if at all possible. If a matching width is not available at the jewelers we have also found that the thin key ring sizers are typically very accurate for rings made in a 1mm-5mm width.

COMFORT FIT RINGS: Request to be sized using comfort fit bands (not standard fit) that are at least 6mm wide. This is only applicable for TUNGSTEN or CERAMIC ring bases.

*Our ceramic stacking bands are 4mm wide and can only be ordered in half size increments from size 4 to 8. All other tungsten and ceramic rings (which are 8mm wide) can only be ordered in half size increments from size 7 to 13 1/2. The widths cannot be changed on any tungsten or ceramic rings.

LOCAL JEWELER

If you would like to be sized locally, we recommend getting sized by two or three reputable jewelers following our guidelines here, depending on if the ring you ordered is a narrow band or a wide band. Please note that our rings are true to international sizing standards, listed below, and our acceptable tolerance on every ring is +/- a tenth of a millimeter.

CARE GUIDELINES

Men’s/Unisex Rings

Because many of our rings have natural materials in them (such as wood, antler, etc.) they do require more care than a traditional solid gold wedding band. We recommend you remove your ring for:

- Any water exposure (including handwashing)
- Using household chemicals, hand sanitizer, or any other harsh chemicals
- Any manual labor
- Anything that might incur impact damage such as hitting your ring on hard surfaces or dropping it

Engagement Rings

- Remove your ring for any manual labor (especially anything that includes gripping items tightly such as furniture, free weights, etc.)
- Remove your ring when using cosmetics, household chemicals, hand sanitizer, or any other harsh chemicals

Returns & Exchanges

We do accept returns and exchanges as long as the ring is returned within 30 days of receiving it, and is returned in perfect condition. Please email us for instructions on sending the ring in!

Custom rings are final sale and may not be returned for any portion of a refund or store credit. “Custom” means altering the ring in any way from the listing you purchased it from including altering the width of the ring, changing the materials, adding a custom ring engraving, etc.

Completed services such as ring engravings, rushes, etc. will not be refunded or credited.

*Staghead Designs reserves the rights to any design created for a client and may post or share that design publicly as well as list the ring on our website for purchase*

Miscellaneous:

Please note that because we use natural materials in our rings (such as wood, antler, etc.) there WILL be variation in how the color and grain of the materials in your ring turn out. No two rings will look the same!

The interior of all eligible rings will be engraved with our antler logo and the metal type of the ring you are purchasing.

If purchasing a stone from the Staghead Mine please note that we do not send the loose stone and all sales are final.
